Saturday Links

Happy Saturday, everybody.

Here's a video from ESPN about the athletic cheating scandal at UNC.

This is a brief news story that features one of the grade A essays.

Our next academic scandal is from the University of Chicago, where they wanted to hire the convicted inside trader Fabrice “Fabulous Fab” Tourre to teach an undergraduate class.  After receiving some bad press, they let him teach a graduate course instead.  There's somebody destined for administration.

Contingent Cassandra and Frankie Bow sent in some other links that will appear later.  All are worth commenting on so I don't want to put too much in one post.

Enjoy your Saturday!

  1. The UNC paper scandal is not as deep as it would seem.

    Via Twitter:
Willingham via email: This "was not a paper from a 'paper class.'" (1/5) @InsideCarolina @tarheelblog @UNCMemes

It was a homework assignment, not a final. Still a rubbish "essay" but ESPN is once again running away with sensationalism that isn't 100% true.

  2. What horrifies me is that I have students passing classes who write worse than this! They end up in my class and act like I'm the devil for making them do more than throw an assignment together five minutes before it's due.
